Meet Sam! Owner of the Forbidden Library bookstore :)

By

I’ve had the absolute pleasure of getting to meet Sam and indulge in her beautiful and thoughtfully decorated bookstore, right here in Calgary, Alberta. She is just a lovely human with a keen eye for location, event collaborations, and of course, romance novels! I have been invited to do readings at her store on Hallowe’en, so I wanted to have an opportunity to highlight more about her, and her wonderful store. Below is her interview with me. 🙂 As always, the questions are kind of rapid fire, so enjoy reading through and getting to learn more about Sam and the Forbidden Library!!

Brandy (B): Please tell us about your job. What made you decide to open the book store? Why the romance genre in particular? And, why the name “Forbidden Library”? (Which I love, by the way!)

Sam (S): I ran a barbershop for about ten years, but honestly, I never had a real passion for hair. Over that time, I learned a lot about business and entrepreneurship, and I realized I wanted to open a venture that truly reflected what I love.

My biggest passion is romance novels — I’m obsessed with them. Knowing this, I decided to open a bookstore that specializes in that genre because I wanted to create a space where people could immerse themselves in stories I genuinely love. Interestingly, I don’t read much outside of romance; it’s just my favourite genre through and through.

As for the name “Forbidden Library,” I love that you like it! I chose it because I’m particularly drawn to forbidden romances — they’re my favourite type of story. I was actually toying with names like “Library” and “Pages,” but ultimately, “Forbidden Library” felt like the perfect fit. It captures that sense of mystery, allure, and adventure that these stories hold, and I think it really represents what my bookstore is all about.

B: That is amazing! I am so glad you were able to turn a passion of yours into a fulfilling business. I would also agree that the name “Forbidden Library” has an allure to it… it definitely suits the genre of the titles you carry, and gives an air of spiciness that encourages people to want to check out the store. Brilliant!

B: Do you find this is a rewarding job? What is the “best” part of your job? And the hardest? Do you have any recommendations for anyone wishing to be their own boss or own their own business? How did you decide on the layout/look of the store?

S: I do find running this bookstore to be incredibly rewarding. One of the best parts is definitely the opportunity to talk about books with so many different people and hear their unique perspectives and favourite stories. The bookish community is honestly one of the nicest groups of people I’ve ever encountered — much kinder than many customer service environments I’ve been in throughout my life.

The hardest part is managing the influx of new releases and figuring out which books will resonate with my customers. It’s a bit of trial and error—trying to predict what will sell, how many copies to order, and balancing my personal favourites with what the community wants. I’m still learning, and sometimes a book I love doesn’t do as well, which can be a little tough.

As for anyone wanting to start their own business, my biggest recommendation is just to go for it. I was really scared at first, worried about failing or making the wrong decision. But I realized that the “what if” fears were worse than the risk itself. If you’re truly passionate about what you’re doing, that passion will shine through and help you succeed. Believe in yourself, learn as you go, and don’t be afraid to take that leap.

B: That’s so lovely to hear how nice the book community is, especially when talking about customer service environments. So glad to know you have nice people coming into your store! I can also appreciate, as I am sure many other people reading this can too, the learning curve that comes with a new business. However, I think your point about just jumping in anyways and not letting the fear or “what ifs” stop you is an important reminder we all need to hear. Thank you for that.

B: My blog talks about spirituality and anxiety… do you have any experiences with either of these that would like to share? Have you had experiences with ghosts or spirits?

S: I believe strongly in the power of intuition and the “gut feeling” that guides us through life. I think that feeling often pushes us in certain directions and can be a source of guidance, especially when it comes to our spiritual well-being or dealing with anxiety.

As for experiences with ghosts or spirits, I haven’t personally had any encounters. I tend to be a bit skeptical—I like to see things to fully believe them. That said, I love the idea of spirits and the possibility of otherworldly connections, and I’m open to the idea that they exist. I genuinely hope to have an experience someday that could solidify that belief for me because I think there’s so much more beyond what we can see. Until then, I embrace the idea and remain open-minded, even if I haven’t had that definitive experience yet.

B: Gut feelings are absolutely real! And very important to listen to if/when something (or someone) feels “off” or just not right for you. Totally fair with being skeptical too! Many people are when it comes to the “woo-woo” and ghosts, etc. However, I like the point you made about being open-minded. I think that is the best place to be really… to be curious about things and others’ stories, but also to stay grounded and to use your own discernment.

B: Okay, so turning gears a little with the next question… We are a pet loving community! Please feel free to share info about your fur babies  🙂

S: I absolutely love our pet-loving community. I have a dog named Louie, and he’s truly my soul dog. I got him when I was 20, and we’ve grown up together — he’s been a constant companion through so many stages of my life. He’s now 15 years old, and even though he’s getting a bit older, he’s still the cutest thing and full of personality.

I also have a cat named Archie, whom I got six years ago. We mainly got him for Louie to have a friend, but honestly, they mostly tolerate each other—hahaha! Despite that, Archie is the sweetest cat, and he absolutely loves cuddles. They each have such unique personalities, and I feel really lucky to have them as part of my family.

B: That is beautiful! I had the pleasure of meeting Louie when I was at the bookstore. He’s so chill and sweet! Archie sounds like fun too… glad they can at least “tolerate” each other, lol.

B: Can you share with us a little about how you handle stress? What do you do to calm down? What do you do for FUN?

S: When I have a stressful day, my go-to way to relax is to read — I love getting lost in another world through a good book. It really helps me unwind and take my mind off stress. I also enjoy watching TV; I’m a bit of a couch potato, but I find it’s a great way to relax and escape for a little while.

For fun, I love spending quality time with my friends and family. We often have game nights or just sit together in their backyards around a fire — those simple, cozy moments really recharge me. Overall, I believe that taking time to relax and enjoy the company of loved ones is essential for balance and happiness.

B: I am right there with you, my fellow couch potato, haha! I absolutely agree that it is important to take time to relax and recharge. The fire also sounds very cozy! And games nights… you’re speaking my language! I am glad to hear you have those opportunities to enjoy some quiet, and also to socialize and recharge your batteries. Thank you for sharing.

B: Now, moving back into some of the “woo-woo”… Do you have any favourite crystals and why?

S: One of my favourite crystals is Angel Aura Quartz. I really love how it combines simplicity and beauty — it’s clear with a stunning rainbow sheen that catches the light in such a mesmerizing way. I find it to be a very uplifting and calming stone, and I appreciate the way it symbolizes clarity, positivity, and spiritual connection. For me, it’s a beautiful reminder to stay open and optimistic, making it a favourite in my collection.

B: Nice! Sounds similar to the reasons why I enjoy Opalite.

B: Do you prefer to cleanse your energies with things like “fire” (things like candles and incense), or “water”… (like baths, showers, etc). Do you have other methods for cleansing your energies?

S: I prefer to cleanse my energies with showers. I find that they are incredibly refreshing and help me clear my mind. I actually have a little routine I like to call “shower baths,” where I’ll lie in the bath while the shower runs — it’s a bit of a hybrid, and I find it really relaxing. I always feel rejuvenated and renewed after a shower, which helps me reset and feel more balanced.

B: Love that! I’m glad the shower baths help you feel more relaxed and balanced. Thank you for sharing that “hybrid” for cleansing with water.

B: What are your top 3 favourite authors/books. Or any specific recommendations for anyone new to the romance genres.

S: My top three favourite authors and books are:

1. *Birthday Girl* by Penelope Douglas. I love the main guy in this book — he’s sweet, kind, and sexy. This story really got me into age-gap romances. I enjoy the forbidden element and the intense yearning between the characters; it’s such a compelling mix.

2. *The Villain* by LJ Shen. The main girl is bubbly and kind, while the main guy initially seems heartless. As the story unfolds, you find out why he is the way he is, and you end up loving him. I especially enjoy how he denies his feelings for her in his inner thoughts, yet those thoughts reveal how much she truly means to him. It’s a beautiful exploration of inner conflict and love.

3. *Never Keep* series by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti. The magic system in this trilogy is really unique and captivating. It’s a true enemies-to-lovers story with multiple points of view, which makes it feel like I’m reading several stories in one. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a mix of fantasy, romance, and intense character development.

For anyone new to the romance genre, I’d suggest starting with books that have elements you enjoy — whether that’s forbidden love, enemies-to-lovers, or age-gap stories. These authors have some great options that can really hook you and introduce you to the wide world of romance.

B: Those all sound like great options! I may have to pick up a couple the next time I’m in. 😉 Thank you for also offering reasons as to why you like those ones, plus that’s a great approach to a new genre… to pick an element you already enjoy. Very smart approach! Thank you.

B: Moving into some more business-y stuff… Any recent or upcoming collabs/events? (Happy to cross promote!!)

S: I’m actually very active in hosting events and collaborations. I regularly hold author signings in the store, which are always a hit with the community. I also have you coming in on Halloween to do a card reading — I’m really excited about that!

Additionally, I have a fun event scheduled for the end of September called “Sketch Your Morally Grey Main Character.” It’s similar to a paint-and-sip night, but instead of painting, everyone will be sketching their favourite morally complex characters. It’s a creative way to engage with the stories we love and connect with fellow book lovers.

I’m always open to new collaborations and cross-promotions, so I’d love to explore more ways to bring the community together through events and special activities!

B: I am sooooo excited for Hallowe’en with you! And cannot wait to dress up too! I love the events I’ve seen on your Tik Tok page as well… and the upcoming sketch event sounds deliciously fun! I’m sure everyone will have a blast! I think you create a very comfortable and safe environment in your store that makes people want to explore the romance genre and connect with people, too. I look forward to seeing more events and collabs you do in the future as well. 🙂

B: I have seen you have new authors doing book signings at the store. Do you have any suggestions for someone wanting to become an author? Or how to promote?

S: I believe social media is incredibly important for new authors trying to get noticed. Platforms like Instagram and Tik Tok can help you reach a broader audience and build a connection with potential readers.

I also recommend reaching out to local bookstores like mine for book signings and events — I love helping new authors gain exposure and get their work into the hands of readers. Offering Advance Review Copies (ARCs) is another great way to gather feedback and generate buzz before your official release.

Most importantly, be genuine and passionate about your story. Share your enthusiasm and love for your work — that authentic passion can really resonate with readers and help your book stand out. Promotion takes effort, but staying true to your story and engaging with your audience can make a big difference.

B: I would agree. I think when it comes to anything you’re selling, the more authentic and passionate you are for your own craft speaks volumes! Thank you for sharing those points, as well as being a place for authors to host book signings. It is a great way to include the community and spotlight not only a new author, but your amazing store, too.

BIs there anything else you wish to share! 🙂 Please include any socials/links too.

S: You can follow me on Facebook, Instagram, and Tik Tok with the handle @forbiddenlibraryyyc. I love engaging with the community and sharing updates, new arrivals, and upcoming events through those platforms.

Additionally, I ship all over Canada, so anyone interested can visit my website at http://www.forbiddenlibrary.ca to check out all the events, pre-orders, and more. I’m always excited to connect with fellow book lovers and bring a little bit of the Forbidden Library experience to readers everywhere.

B: Great to hear that you ship all over Canada! And amazing you are connected into the various social media platforms. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer these random, rapid-fire style of questions. And thank you to everyone reading this post.

Please do check out Sam at the Forbidden Library, whether in person or online. I hope to see your community grow even bigger, and for more people to connect through the various novels you carry, and the events you host. 🙂
