Tarot Card Reading: Short Spreads

By

I would like to take a quick minute to apologize for the delay with this posting! It has been a rather long week and I did not have the energy to get this out on my regular day (Friday). I did want to create a post still this week, so I decided to do a quick one with some examples for some easy tarot spreads. These are quick ones that can be done on a daily basis if you choose to, and are considered more simple and straightforward with an answer because they don’t involve too many cards. With these spreads below, you can use a regular deck of cards, or use tarot or oracle cards. My general preference is to use Oracle cards because I find I get more messages by looking at the images more so then when using a Tarot deck and following the traditional meanings behind each card. Below I have included some “tarot spreads” for how to lay out the cards when asking a question. I have learned these through watching YouTube videos, tarot classes, and different spreads found in booklets that came with a deck. My suggestion is to play around with these and see what feels more comfortable for you. There are many ways to do a reading and these are just a few suggestions. Below I have used some images from the Rider-Waite deck, the Light Seer’s Tarot and an image from a poster (Twisted Tree of Life & Skeleton Ghosts), to help explain some of the spreads. See which spreads you prefer, and if you want, you can use these on a regular basis to get a better feeling for a particular deck/card. Have fun!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Two card spread

Card 1 shows what you are doing well and Card 2 is a suggestion or advice for what to work on.

Example: Card 1 is the Star. What are you doing well? Answer: You are holding hope and optimism.

Card 2 is Eight of Swords. What do you need to work on? Answer: You need to work on not letting your thoughts hold you “hostage” or allowing negativity to push you out of feeling optimistic.

Main advice then from these two cards: Don’t overthink the situation!

Three card spread

This spread seems to be one of the most common ones I come across. The first card is to show past energy, the second card is for the present, and the third card is for a potential future outcome. If you do not like what you see in the third card, then you can look back at the present card. I find with this spread if you don’t like what it is showing for a future outcome, then the idea is you need to change something in your current situation, current energies, for a different outcome.

Four card spread

This is the “past, present, future and advice” spread. I find this to be helpful when trying to make a decision. An example is below in regards to a work situation.

Card 1 (past): 7 of Swords… feelings of betrayal, deceit, lies, thief

Card 2 (present): unexpected changes, foundation being “rocked”

Card 3 (potential future): clarity, happiness, freedom

Card 4 (advice): collaboration, celebration, sharing ideas

** Example above with the cards shared, I’d say that whatever the past job/career situation was would’ve been very uncomfortable and feelings of distrust with colleagues and/or management would’ve been present. However, with the Tower card in the present spot, there would be a “shake up” or some major change that is destined to happen (so change in structure at the job, or even potentially a complete change in job because maybe leaving that employer or company). Even though the present card looks scary, the potential future outcome is a lot brighter and happier with the Sun card. Therefore, we can look to the fourth card, the advice card, to understand how to get from present to future card… and in this spread it is suggested to work with people and collaborate, become a team and celebrate each other’s successes. So instead of tearing each other apart (like the first card would suggest), the advice is to create strong partnerships with more than one person and collaborate and work together.

Yes/ No Answer

For this one I would reduce the tarot deck and either only use the Major Arcana cards, or one suit (from minor arcana). Whichever you decide is fine, but will need to assign “positive” or “negative” to each card. Then shuffle your cards while asking your Yes or No question. Once complete, pull out 3 (or 5 maximum) tarot cards and see what comes out. If it’s mostly positive, then your answer is “Yes!”. If mostly negative, then your answer is a “No”.

Just as an example, a “yes” answer may look something like this:

With these three cards, the first two are positive and the third card is negative. However, the point is there’s an uneven number of cards on purpose so there’s no tie. More positive than negative cards so the answer is a “Yes!”

I do find if choosing cards from the minor arcana I prefer using the suit of pentacles (coins) if it’s a question about money, finances, career, investments, etc. Whereas if it is to do with a relationship, friendship, passion project, etc… then the suit of cups (hearts) is a better fit.

What other things to notice when looking at a tarot spread?

Remember to also look at the images on the cards. What stands out the most to you? If you are using an animal deck… what is the animal on the card? You can also Google any additional symbolic meanings to see if your spirit guides have more information to share.

As usual, these are just some little ways you can incorporate the use of tarot (or oracle) cards into daily life to help guide you through situations and relationships. Of course there’s plenty of other spreads one can find online. The above are just some examples I use more regularly.

Thank you again for your patience this week with my posting. Hope you have a wonderful day!!
